You may have already registered for Launchpad on the course homepage. But in order to log in and view the course material, you will also need a Google account. If you don't already have a Google account, create one now for free. Please note that you will NOT be able to log in with your Google account to access materials until the course starts on June 17.

Lots of you have been asking about certificates. Will you get one? YES. This course is not formally assessed, and will not give you official academic credit. But we WILL be issuing certificates of completion, for everyone who successfully finishes the course. This will require getting at least 60% in the final multiple choice assessment. You will also need to submit a final assignment, where you will have the opportunity to apply what you have learned in the course on the job.

As part of the final assignment, your buddy will need to approve your submission, and confirm that you have made an effort to apply it at work. Read more about the buddy system below – this is an extremely important part of Launchpad, and is part of what makes it different from many of the standard courses you will find online.

Launchpad is broken into a series of units, or topics. These units are listed on the left hand side of the course home screen. The main topics we will cover are:

  • Goal-setting
  • Self-management
  • Communication skills
  • Influencing Others
Each unit contains several video lessons. In each lesson, one of our lecturers, Thabo Mosala and Buyani Zwane, will teach you about a key element of workplace effectiveness. If you’re worried about video bandwidth, you can choose the audio-only, the slides-only option or the text transcript.

You can work through the lessons at your own pace. You will need to finish and complete all the lessons and assignments by the final deadline at midnight on June 30 if you want to apply for a certificate. You should allow about 5-10 hours to complete the whole course, including all the assessments and activities.

On June 17, the first three units will be made available. The remaining three units, plus details about the final assessment and assignment, will be made available on June 24.

After each lesson, there will be a short multiple choice quiz to test your knowledge. These will NOT count toward the final assessment, but are a useful way of monitoring your own progress. There will also be an informal quiz at the end of each unit to help you consolidate what you have learned.

Most lessons are also followed by an activity, where you will go and apply what you have just learned to your job or business, then discuss it with your buddy or group. Sometimes you will be asked to reflect on what you have learned and share your thoughts on Facebook or the course discussion forum. The activities will NOT count toward the final assessment, but you will find the final assignment much easier if you complete them!

At the end of each UNIT, there will be an end of unit assessment or 'knowledge check'. This will NOT count toward the final mark, but will help you consolidate your knowledge.

We think learning is more effective when it is social. So we strongly encourage you to find a colleague, mentor, boss or friend who can work through the course with you. You’ll learn from each other. The Self Management unit includes a lesson on Accountability that will explain why having a buddy is good for your business and your career.

If you want to apply for a certificate at the end of the course, you will need to provide us with the name and email address of your buddy. We will email your buddy, who will have to approve your final assignment submission, and confirm that you have made an effort to apply it at work.

Some of you will be working through the course in one of our pilot Learning Labs. Your facilitator will explain how the buddy system will work in this context.
